The Judicial Branch
Supreme Court
The Supreme Court of Canada is the highest court in Canada. It includes Canada's courts of law. They have the final word on all the rules on making and applying laws. The Supreme Court has 9 judges from 4 regions of Canada. They decide legal issues of public importance and direct the executive branch on how to carry out the laws. They apply, define, and interpretate laws. The Prime Minister and the Cabinet nominate a list of judges which get reviewed by the MPs and 3 names are chosen. The Prime Minister then chooses 1 of those 3 people to fill in a vacant spot for the Supreme Court. Everyone in the Supreme Court comes from a legal profession. The Supreme Court acts like a check in power on the other branches in the Canadian Federal Government.
